Newsarama is reporting that not only is Jon Bernthal returning to the role of Punisher, he’ll be doing it in his own series. Netflix has announced that they’ve ordered a standalone series of the Punisher. Steve Lightfoot was also announced as showrunner for the series, as well as, penning the first two episodes.
The decision for a standalone series was based on Bernthal’s performance of Frank Castle in season 2 of Daredevil, according to Cindy Holland, Netflix VP of Original Content.
“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot.”
The Punisher series will be the first series ordered by Netflix after it’s initial order of 5 Marvel original series; those being Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and the still in development Iron Fist and the Defenders.
No release date of the Punisher series was announced as of yet.
