Bleeding Cool (via Star Wars News Net) is reporting rumors about Disney planning a stand-alone Obi-Wan Kenobi centric movie starring Ewan McGregor.  Rumors of an Obi-Wan movie have been swirling around the internets for years in one form or another.  Some versions including McGregor, some not.  This time around, though, there seems to be a sense of firmness to these rumors.  What with Disney CEO, Bob Iger recently announcing plans for the Star Wars universe to expand over the next 15 years.

With that kind of time chunk, Disney will need plenty of movies to fill the slate.  So, an Obi-Wan movie makes sense.  Which brings us back to a quote from Star Wars News Net’s anonymous source:

“Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm fully intend to make an Obi-Wan movie set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with Ewan McGregor in tow.”

Interesting.  That’s the perfect time period for an Obi-Wan movie.  Let’s address exactly what the hell old Ben’s been doing in the desert all those years.

One of the most persistent rumors following Obi-Wan around is the story being a three movie story arc. Well, according to Star Wars News Net’s source, they’ll be none of the trilogy nonsense for the old wizard.  But, a stand-alone adventure.

“I want to emphasize that it’s a movie, singular – not a trilogy.”

If any of this is to be believed, I’m totally down with it.  I don’t think I have it in me for another Star Wars trilogy at this point.  After the Skywalker saga has finished (if it ever does, that is) is there really a need for another three movie story arc?  The Hobbit, anyone?

But, here’s the caveat to all this rumor nonsense…McGregor has been pretty open about his (I’ll be kind here) disinterest in Star Wars as a whole, being quoted as saying back in 2007.

“Yeah yeah, Star Wars is total rubbish, but you should totally check out Trainspotting.  It’s my best work.”

Of course, it’s been over a decade since “Revenge of the Sith” debuted in theaters.  And, his stance does seem to have soften over the years, going as far as saying “I’d be happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness starts,” back in 2015 at an appearance at the Edinburgh Film Fest in Scotland.  And telling Den of Geek as recently as last year that he “…was very happy to be in them [the prequels]…”

Even still, he doesn’t seem all that interested in resurrecting the role.  From later in that same quote:

“…I don’t have a burning need to do them again. Or indeed any sort of fascination for the movies that everyone else seems to have. I don’t seem to have that – maybe because I’ve been in them? I’ve seen behind the curtain. It doesn’t have the same sort of wonderment to me.”

So what does any of this mean?  Well, we could find out soon enough.  Because there’s a really good chance that an announcement about an Obi-Wan movie could be made at the Star Wars: Celebration in Orlando, Florida the weekend of April 13th.  As Star Wars News Net’s source says:

“An announcement of an Obi-Wan movie might just be one of the big surprises at Celebration Orlando.”

So…there you have it.  A stand-alone Obi-Wan movie starring Ewan McGregor may just be in the works.  “May.”

Stranger things have happened.  It is the 40th anniversary of “Star Wars,” after all.
